Correspondence, patents, accounts, writings, contracts, drawings, and other papers related to Fulton (1797-1850, bulk 1797-1816). Much of the correspondence is with Robert R. Livingston and Nicholas Roosevelt pertaining to their mutual interest in steamboat design and construction, ferry rights, patents and patent laws, business associates and competitors, etc. Manuscripts include "To the Friends of Mankind," an essay on free trade, undated (56 p.); "Notes on Torpedo Warfare," 1811 (34 p.); "A Steam Vessel of War," 1814 (7 p.); "Experiments on the Model of a Boat To Be Moved by a Steam Engine," Jan. 9, 1803 (11 p.); and a letter to Benjamin West on canal systems, Feb. 22, 1797 (18 p.).
